D’Basilika vun haut ass schon déi 5. Kierch, déi op dëser Platz opgebaut gouf. Déi éischt Kierch gouf vum Hellege Willibrord gebaut, nodeems hien an de Jore 698 an 706 Schenkunge vun der Äbtissin Irmina vun Oeren/Tréier a Pippins II krut hat.
No sengem Doud de 7. November 739 ass déi Kierch awer schnell ze kleng ginn, well ëmmer méi Pilger béi säi Graf komm si fir hien ze veréieren. Em d’Joer 800 gouf dowéinst eng zweet, méi grouss Kierch opgeriicht. Déi ass awer am Joer 1016 duerch e Féier nees zerstéiert ginn. Am Joer 1031 konnt dunn eng am romanesche Stil gebaute Kierch ageweit ginn, déi ongeféier esou grouss war ewéi déi aktuell Kierch. Am 17. Joerhonnert si verschidde Kapellen drun ugebaut ginn.
Am Joer 1794 gouf d’Kierch vu franséische Revolutiounszaldote geschannt a geplëmmt.
De 26. Dezember 1944 gouf d’Kierch vun den dätschen Truppen no hirem Réckzoch gesprengt.

Today’s basilica is already the fifth church built at this place. The first church was built by saint Willibrord after he got some donations in the years 698 and 706 from the abbess Irmina from Oeren/Treves and Pippin II.
After his death on the 7th november 739, more and more pilgrims came to his graveyard to honor him. Due this fact, the church got fast too small. Around the year 800 a second and bigger church was built. This church was destroyed during a huge fire in 1016. In the year 1031 a new church, built in a roman style, was inaugurated. This one had approximately the same size as the actual basilica. During the 17th century, different chapels were attached on the church.
During 1794, the church was disgraced and pillaged by French revolutionisers. The church with the remaining buildings was auctioned in 1797 and became national property. During the first half of the 19th century the church was used as a stone factory and a place for executions. In the middle of the 19th century a part of the church was already collapsed and the rest of the building was in dereliction. Therefore, the citizens of Echternach have founded in 1862 the Willibrordus-buildingcooperation. On this way they’ve collected money to fund the restoration of the church. The church, restorated on this way, was inaugurated in 1868.
In the year 1906, the remains of saint Willibrord, hold after the French revolution in the church saint Peter and Paul, were ceremonial transferred back to the abbey church. In the year 1939 the church became a papal basilica, what is attested with the signs (small bell and umbrella), you can see on the left and the right side of the main altar. On the 26th December 1944, the church was blasted from retreating German troops. During this act, the west part of the building was heavily damaged. During the rebuilding the focus was set towards the roman origin of the church. The primary focus was the construction of a wooden ceiling. The main front and the towers were applied from the pilgrim church from Paray-le Monial. The rebuilt church was inaugurated in the year 1953.
