Die größte Gefahr, die dem Küstenlandstrich seit Menschengedenken droht, sind Sturmfluten.
Darum began man 1957 mit der Planung der Eiderabdämmung.
Ein Teil dieses Sturmflutschutzes ist die 1973 fertiggestellte Eiderabdämmung mit dem Eider-Sperrwerk.
Das Eider-Sperrwerk hat fünf 40 m breiten Sielöffnungen.
Es stellt neben dem Sturmflutschutz auch die Vorflut und die Schifffahrt auf der Eider sicher.
Beim Bau der Schutzanlage gegen den "Blanken Hans" wurden folgene Materialien verbaut:
48.000 m3 Beton
7.000 m3 Spannbeton
6.000 t Beton- und Spannstahl
15.800 lfd. m Stahlpfähle
18.000 m2 Spundwände
95.000 t Felsbruchstein

The biggest danger which threatens the coastal region since human memory are storm floods

A Part of the stormfloodprotection is 1973-finished with the "Eidersperrwerk".
The "Eidersperrwerk" has five 40 m wide opening openings.
In addition to the storm surge, it also ensures the flood and the shipping on the river Eider.
In the construction of the protection system against the "Blankenhans" the following materials were used:

7,000 m3 prestressed concrete
6,000 t concrete and prestressing steel
15,800 meters of steel piles
18,000 m2 of sheet piling
