Der Ort liegt im Industrieviertel in Niederösterreich. Die Fläche der Marktgemeinde umfasst 22,07 km², 36,74 % der Fläche sind bewaldet.
Im Altertum war das Gebiet Teil der Provinz Pannonien. Im österreichischen Kernland Niederösterreich liegend teilte der Ort die wechselvolle Geschichte Österreichs. 1889 wurde die Franz-Josef-Warte eröffnet.
