Katarzynka to najbardziej rozpoznawalny kształt Toruńskich Pierników. Na przestrzeni lat powstało wiele legend o jego powstaniu. Jest to również najdłużej produkowana forma Toruńskich Pierników, nie spotykana nigdzie indziej na świecie.
Legenda o powstaniu „Katarzynki”
Przed wiekami mieszkał w toruńskim grodzie mistrz piernikarski, który miał piękną córkę Katarzynę. Zakochał się w niej pracujący u niego czeladnik Bogumił. Srogi ojciec nie zezwalał jednak na ich ślub. Pewnego dnia Bogumił poszedł na spacer za miasto. Przechodząc obok stawu, dostrzegł tonącą pszczołę. Bez namysłu wyciągnął ją z wody. Pszczółka, gdy wyschły jej skrzydełka, odfrunęła. Po chwili na ramieniu Bogumiła usiadła królowa pszczół, która powiedziała mu, żeby do ciasta na pierniki dodawał miodu i korzennych przypraw. Gdy Bogumił wrócił do Torunia, okazało się, że niespodziewaną wizytę w mieście zapowiedział król. Czeladnik przygotował ciasto według zaleceń królowej pszczół, z którego wykonał dwa serca, ułożone naprzeciw siebie i połączył je dwoma kółkami symbolizującymi obrączki. Po włożeniu do pieca, serca i obrączki połączyły się, tworząc niespotykany dotąd kształt. Tym niezwykłym piernikiem poczęstowano króla, który o świcie stanął u bram miasta. Monarcha zachwycony nowym, wyjątkowym smakiem postanowił nagrodzić Bogumiła za jego zdolności, nadając mu tytuł mistrza piernikarskiego. Doceniony przez samego króla Bogumił mógł pojąć za żonę Katarzynę. Pierniki o nietypowym kształcie naszą odtąd nazwę „katarzynki”.

Katarzynka is the most recognizable shape of Toruński Piernik. Various legends about its origins have been told over the years. It is also the form of Toruński Piernik that has been produced for the longest time and is not found anywhere else in the world.
Legend about the origin of “Katarzynka”
Long time ago in Toruń there was a Gingerbread Master, who had a beautiful daughter called Katarzyna. Young man Bogumił working with the master fall in love with his daughter. But ruthless father did not approve their marriage. Some day Bogumił went for a walk outside city centre. Walking along the pond he saw a drowning bee. Without further thinking he pulled the bee out of the water and saved its life. The bee immediately flew away. After a while a bee queen sat on Bogumił’s shoulder, who told him to add honey and spices to gingerbread dough. When Bogumił returned to the city centre it turned out that King said he will have unexpected visit in Toruń. Young man prepared dough the way that bee queen told him. He made two gingerbread hearth connected by two circles symbolizing wedding rings. After baking the gingerbread hearts and circles connected and created unusual shape. King was served with this new gingerbread when he entered the city. King, delighted by taste of gingerbread, decided to reward Bogumił for his skills, giving him a Title of Gingerbread Master. Appreciated by the kings Bogumił could finally marry Katarzyna. From that time gingerbreads of that shape are called “Katarzynki” in memory of that story.
