Geocache Description:

Old Round Mnt. Fire Tower. The cache is a clear plastic gallon pretzel container.

This is a quick but very steep 30 minute hike to the top, where you will find an old Forest Service fire tower, no longer in use. The box on top is now on the ground, but you can still climb the tower for a great 360 degree view of the area. Use a Maine Gazateer to get you close, follow woods roads until you get to Round Mountain Lodge, which used to be the forest rangers cabin and is located on the north side of the mountain. A trail leaves from behind the cabin and rises steeply to the top. The trail is not much more than a deer trail, but you can follow it and it has ribbons along it to follow.
NOTE: Be very familiar with a map, compass, and your gps before attempting this hike. It is a very remote location and in summer will cost you $6 to enter North Maine Woods. Dont forget to check out Round Mountain Pond, which is right next to the mountain and is quite pretty.
