Geocache Description:

E: The cache was hidden to please MAntunes (expect thorns, snakes, rocks, mud, ghosts, holes and lots of high bushes).

Paderne Castle ocupies a strategic position over the Quarteira creek and is located near a once important way across that river, over the bridge that can be seen Southwest from the castle. King Dennis (D. Dinis) gave, in 1305, the Paderne Castle to the Master of the Avis Order, D. Lourenço Annes. It was a pity that the monarch, instead of giving the castle away didn't rebuild it has he did to the Alvor Castle (1300), the Tavira walls (1303) or the Castro Marim walls (1303). Maybe if, then, it was rebuilt it would be possible to «enjoy the nature of its primitive construction and better assess its strenght and valour» (Ataíde Oliveira, 1910). The priest of Paderne said in 1758, that the castle and its tower suffered many damages caused by the 1755 earthquake. Today the castle is almost gone and, its water tank is completely clogged. Acording to Ataíde Oliveira (1910): «Inside the castle walls and almost in front of the chappel there was a very deep water tank, the ancient say, but it is clogged nowadays.» If the material marks are destroyed by time, legends are still very alive and assure a connection of the castle's underground to the creek.

(in "Algarve, percursos naturais", given to me by MAntunes)

The name of this cache is the one given to the building technique used on the castle. Taipa is chiefly building wall with very well packed dirt. Its very strong, provided that it is isolated. I supose that the castle was all white, since the traditional coating for taipa is lye. If it isn't applied very seldon, taipa gets exposed to rain and wind, and erodes very fast. Another famous construction made of packed dirt is the great wall of China, wich was isolated with stone.

Although I didn't agree with the punctuation of the original text, I translated it keeping the original punctuation, has it was on the book.
