Neptune and the Fisherman
Ages and ages ago, when the world was new, men lived in peace and simple prosperity. Everyone had enough to eat and a humble shelter for his home. Some were farmers that tilled the soil, others were hunters that searched the dark forests for wild game, and yet others were fishers of the sea. The fisherman's lot was much easier in those days; each morning, he needed only to walk along the shore, gathering the bounty that Neptune (god of the sea) cast up from the briny deeps. Along the beach he would find fish, oysters, clams, and all he required for his daily food.
One morning, the fisherman found a beautiful pearl among the shellfish cast upon the shore, and taking it to the village, was able to barter it at a high price. From then on, he sought anxiously for additional pearls, and when none were forthcoming, began to scheme. ‘If I were to venture out into the water myself,’ he thought, ‘I could gather more such treasure.’ So he built a simple boat of driftwood, paddled out from shore, and dived into the water. Beneath the waves, he pried about among the corals looking for treasure, neglecting the simple fare cast up each day on the beach by Neptune. Though he did discover an occasional pearl, the work was long, hard and dangerous.
When the god of the sea discovered what the fisherman had been doing, he was angered. He arose from the waves in a great storm, and taking back all the treasure the fisherman had found, hid it away in a cache. Then the god of the sea proclaimed that he would no longer deliver the fisherman’s daily food upon the shore. If the fisherman wished to partake of Neptune’s bounty, he would have to risk his life upon the waves, and toil for his provender from dawn till dusk henceforth.
Moral – Be content with your simple gifts, lest your greed anger the gods.
The posted coordinates for this cache description will lead you to a marker tag which will point you to the final cache. DO NOT hunt for this marker during periods of strong winds or bad weather, postpone your search until another day. The marker may also be unavailable for extended periods during winter.
Once retrieved, the marker will supply coordinates for the final cache (which is a familiar type). The final cache contains a logbook and pen, but is too small for trading items.
You will find the closest legal parking at N 42° 11.034 ~ W 87° 47.190. From there, make your way to the park entrance at N 42° 10.964 ~ W 87° 47.037, and then to the marker at the posted coordinates.
