Geocache Description:

DO NOT POST ANSWERS IN YOUR LOG! The 0.5-mile Earthquake Trail near the Bear Valley Visitor Center has a number of displays describing California geology, plate tectonics, and the San Andreas fault.

During the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, the San Andreas fault ruptured the ground for a distance of about 270 miles. Ground movement caused displacement of fences, roads, railroad tracks, and buildings. The National Park Service reconstructed this fence along the Earthquake Trail to show 16 feet of offset that was recorded in this area. The fence on the right hand side moved toward the northwest in the same direction as the Pacific Plate and the fence on the left side moved toward the southeast in the same direction as the North American Plate.

To claim this Earthcache, answer these 2 questions & take your photo @ the fence,

(1) Buildings will shake on any materials during an earthquake. On what types of materials will building shake the most?

(2) What are the two tectonic plates which are moving here to cause the stresses that form earthquakes?

Keep in mind that this is an EarthCache, stay on the path and respect the National Parks, they did give us permission to be here.

Point Reyes National Seashore has so much history, from Maritime and Lighthouse, Coast Miwok people, Sir Francis Drake, as well as the Manila Galleon wreck of Sebastian Cermeno and tons more. Plan on spending the whole day here exploring. See the website below for more info before you get here!
