Geocache Description:

This location was the staging area for one of the most remarkable treks in the history of the American West. Some nineteen hundred British and Scandinavian converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wished to emigrate to Utah, but they were too poor to buy animals and wagons for the journey. Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, proposed that they cross the plains on foot with their few belongings in handcarts. The Church Presidency wrote: "Let them come on foot, with handcarts or wheel-barrows: let them gird up their loins and walk through."

The coords will get you to the parking lot. Turn off Mormon Trek Blvd. onto Hawkeye Park Road. Take the first right turn, (an unmarked street) and you'll find the park at the end of this street.

You'll need to visit all four stations along this 1/4 mile paved trail to get the neccasary information. You shouldn't need a calculater but you'll want something to write on.

#1 On what day in September did the first Mormons arrive in Salt Lake City?

#2 What year did the Mormons start arriving in Iowa City?

#3 In the summer of what year were the Mormons caught in the severe early winter snow storm while crossing Wyoming?

#4 How many Mormons are buried near the burial site in
the park?

#5 In all about how many Mormans made this trek.

Now you should have five figures that you'll use to calculate the co-ords for the cache. Always use the same degees and minutes you have for the parking, only the last three digits will change.

First list your answers, #1 through #5 starting with #1 at the top and #5 at the bottom.
For the last three digits of N41 40.XXX, use the last digit of #5 followed by the last digit of #1 and then the second digit of #2.

For the longitude use the answer from #4 followed by the first and second digits added together of #3 and then the first digit of #2.
W091 34.XXX

The cache is an ammo can with all the regular trinkets.
FTF gets a special prize.

This is a beautiful area to walk. And you'll learn something about the history of the Mormons and their connection with Iowa City.

Happy geocaching.
