Geocache Description:

Three lighthouses were built on a slender sand bar island called
Long Tail Point about 3-1/2 miles north of the mouth of the Fox
River in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Only the ruins of the first 1848
"Old Stone Tower" remain today. This series of two
caches is intended to bring you to this remote place to explore
what is left of these lighthouses and to tell some of the long
history of this isolated place. A boat or a hike across the frozen
bay in winter is required to get to these caches.

The 1899 Long Tail Point Lighthouse was the third lighthouse built on Long Tail. It was a one and one-half story square wooden building with a hipped roof that included a round cast iron lantern room. It was constructed offshore on a concrete pier with a wooden crib foundation. The previous 1859 lighthouse continued to be used as the keeper's residence until 1936 when the 1899 lighthouse was automated. Around 1945, a number of years following the completion of the Green Bay Entrance Lighthouse, the 1899 lighthouse was discontinued. On April 8-9, 1973 the 1899 Long Tail Point Lighthouse was washed off its pilings and destroyed by a storm. The coordinates above are for the cache container with a view of where the 1899 lighthouse once stood. The actual coordinates of the 1899 lighthouse were N44 35.056 W087 58.604.
