Hawksbill Crag Traditional Geocache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Chuck Walla: This geocache has come to my attention as needing an owner maintenance visit. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either fix the problem or archive the listing. See the maintenance section of the Geocache Hiding Guidelines [LINK]. In the meantime, I am temporarily disabling this cache page.

To the cache owner, if there is a good reason for a long delay in enabling this cache, do NOT contact me through email or the message center. Instead, please post an update note log here on the cache page so that everyone will know what's going on. When the maintenance is completed, you can re-enable the listing yourself by entering an "enable listing" log. Use an "Owner Maintenance" log to clear the "Needs Maintenance" attribute if set.

If this cache is not returned to service within a reasonable amount of time (within 30 days of the date of this note), or at least a note of intention to do so posted to the cache page, I will be archiving this cache page for lack of maintenance.

Geocache Description:

The geocache is located near a huge rock outcrop that extends over the edge of the bluff known as Hawksbill Crag. It's a beautiful, three mile round-trip hike to the geocache and back. Update March, 2024: This site has been popular since it was first placed over 20 years ago. There's been a recent fire and other issues in the area. We're no longer able to physically visit the site. If someone would like to replace the cache and post a note with new coordinates, go for it!

From the intersection of Highways 43 and 21, take Highway 21 south for 1.2 miles. Just before the bridge across the Buffalo River, turn right onto the gravel road called Cave Mountain Road. This road starts with a curving drive up the steep side of a mountain. Fun! You don't need a four-wheel drive, but the road can get bumpy. The hiking area is part of the Ozark National Forest near the Buffalo River. Drive 6 miles (from the turn off Highway 21) to the Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area parking lot on the right. As a reference, you'll pass the Cave Mountain Church and cemetery on the right at 5.4 miles.

The next phase of your adventure leads you down a well-marked trailhead (N 35° 54 100 W 93° 27 617). Cross the street from the parking lot and you'll see the trailhead. The hike from here is about 3 miles "out and back."

After about a mile, you'll see a fork. The hike continues around the crest of the cliffs. If you've got small children, you might consider the woods hike (left) rather than the cliffs (right). Either way and you'll end up at the Hawksbill Crag overlook. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photos.

The cache is in a plastic box with a log book. Take a picnic lunch. The view is fantastic. Muggles have found and destroyed it twice in the past, so please re-hide carefully and cover your tracks.

Special thanks to Jerry Turner and BiloxiBear for notifying me about muggle attacks and ozzfreak for resetting the cache.
