After gathering the requisite photos and after a short break for food, it was back on down the mountain. As I wasn't quite sure which scree slope was safe and which ended in a head wall, we elected to return the way we came. We certainly didn't break any land speed records, but we weren't out to. My knees survived the ascent and descent quite well; I'm totally sold on two trekking poles.
outforthehunt, thanks for the mountain cap in a beautiful spot. It's definitely not a drive-up cap, and it was worth every single footstep on the way up and back.
