12:20 HST Found TGF 95 at 9500 ft. . we believe. More later. First phone log.
Now for the rest of the story.
Just 2 weeks ago we see that The Geocoin Fairy has made it to our state. Only problem, we live on a different island!
We do have our annual trip to commune with Madame Pele and celebrate sillygirl's birthday coming up, but it didn't seem likely that any of the coins would still be in caches after 2 weeks. Then by sheer coincidence one of our caching buddies was on the Big Island at the same time as TGF. He's not a coin guy but understands the obsession, so even though he was on his way home he sent someone to look for the coin in the cache on the Kona side, but it was not in the cache.
After that, we put this cache on our watchlist to see if anyone came to claim the coin. When no one had, we ventured up here our first full day on the island. We stopped at the visitors center, where sillygirl couldn't decide if she wanted to invest in the benchmark replicas they sell. We left without one and took our 2WD rental car up the short road to the trailhead. We could see our goal, the summit of Pu'u Kalepeamoa, from the car. But at 9200 feet it was looong 0.22 miles. Found the cache without too much trouble and while I was looking at the log book, sillygirl found the coin amongst the rest of the stash. It was TGF coin 95, maybe fore 9500 feet at the summit? But for us '95 is the year we met, so it's a great number for us.
So we took the TGF coin, and a small pin. We left California & Kansas microcoins and a Hawaiian Islands magnet. TFTC. Then on reflection, sillygirl decided she would regret it we went backt to sea level without the benchmark, so it was an early birthday present. We didn't know it then, but finding this cache was the first of several adventures on this trip!
