Today, we took on the Raven Walk challenge! We left the Cwmcarn Visitor Centre at 10.00 and found this fourth Raven cache at 17.15.
From the second Raven post, we continued along to the Ynys Hywel Countryside Centre and made a slight diversion to find the information at VC1. From here, we strolled along a gorgeously bluebelled path through lushly green deciduous woods to a forest track. Turning off the forest track and up the hill took us to the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk, along which we backwardly retraced the route that we took two weeks ago between CC4 and CC5. The long ascent eventually took us steeply up the west flank of Mynydd Machen and past its long coal tip, crossing the steel cables of the old aerial ropeway embedded in the ground. From the trig point, we had very hazy views, and we didn't linger, as the chilly wind was whipping us mercilessly. We hastily descended the eastern slope, the gusts easing as we went through another sheep-filled field to the edge of the woodland.
Here, we found a sloping field awash in bluebells -- truly a beautiful sight. We sat here, by the third Raven post, for examination of the cache's contents and a short break. E was surprised she didn't feel more tuckered out by now -- is she really getting fit? S said, "What hike? This has been a mere walk!"
After making our third brass rubbings, we traded the razzily patterned gecko for a yo-yo.
Thanks for the fourth cache on this excellent Raven Walk!
