New Hampshire, USA has 48 mountains over 4,000' (1,200 m) high. Since 1957, the Appalachian Mountain Club has awarded just over 10,000 hikers admission to the AMC Four Thousand Footer Club for climbing all 48 peaks in a lifetime.
Mt. Moosilauke (4,802' or 1,464 m) may have been named by the Algonquin Native Americans. In their language, Moosilauke means "bald place". It certainly describes the bare summit with views east to the Franconia Ridge and the Presidentials, and west to the Green Mountains of Vermont, with the Adirondacks of New York in the distance. Moosilauke is the most western of the White Mountains. The first mountain winter observatory was set up on the summit in 1869-1870. Dartmouth College owns much of the eastern and southern portions of the mountains, and maintains many of its trails.
There are several ways to hike the mountain, since it is approachable from nearly every side. The most common is probably the Gorge Brook Trail. It starts high up the mountain at the Ravine Lodge (owned by the Dartmouth Outing Club). This is a roundtrip of 7.4 miles with 2,550' of elevation gain. The Beaver Brook Trail is the section of the Appalachian Trail leading off the mountain to the north. This route is short, and steep, passing a series of beautiful cascading waterfalls. It is 7.6 miles with 3,100' of elevation gain. The Moosilauke Carriage Road is wide with good footing and an easy grade. But it is still 10.2 miles roundtrip with 3,100' of elevation gain.
