"We zijn met achten,
we stelen alle nachten.
"There are eight of us,
we steal every night.
Because we are too lazy to work,
we rob the churches
About forest and bush
Out through the clouds!”
One of the most famous legends is the legend of the Bokkenrijders, or as it was written in the 18th century: Bockeryeders.
It was a brutal gang that was active in the border area on both sides of the Maas (Meuse), in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
People believed they were riding on jackasses through the air...
The most famous and controversial goat riding trial in the country of 's-Hertogenrade was the case against Joseph Kerckhoffs, who was regularly mentioned as leader or captain of the gang during the interrogations of the prisoners. Kerckhoffs enjoyed the reputation of a respectable and good Catholic. Between 1743 and 1752 he served in the Austrian army and learned the trade of surgeon. After his discharge from military service, he settled in Herzogenrath with the consent of Abbot Fabritus of Rolduc and achieved a certain prosperity there. Thanks to his profession, he had relationships within circles of the nobility and clergy. But he is also said to have made enemies: according to Charles Rahlenbeck, Kerckhoffs had quarreled with the chief court officer, Count Maximilian Hendrik Hoen of Carthils, about the amount of a submitted declaration for services rendered to the court.
