Current Goal

Mission: Travel around England - because I love travelling around England, and since I can't be there all the time, let the coin travel on my behalf.

About This Item

Karel IV., otec vlasti, král český a císař římský

Města ochuzená a vypleněná, vesnice sdrané a ožebračené, panstvo zpupné, odbojné a loupeživé, lid skleslý a utýraný.

A teď?

Charles IV, a Czech king and a Holy Roman Emperor

A Czech poet Jan Neruda wrote a romantic ballad about Charles IV in which he described how Charles tried the Czech wine for the very first time. Sitting at an oaken table with Sir Bushek of Velhartice, he found the wine bitter - as bitter as are the Czechs! But, swallowing slowly and tasting a few more sips, he realized that it has some magic, that first it tastes bitter but then it gets pleasant and tasty. The same is said about the Czechs - that they may appear a bit rough at the begining but they are good in their hearts.

In a movie about Charles IV, the king is heard saying:

"But tell me, is it possible not to love what we have created?

When I first came to this country, I found only a mournfully looking desert. The towns had been pillaged and plundered, the villages worn down and pauperized, the gentry disdainful, rebellious and maraunding, the people downhearted and ill-treated.

But now? After I see the fruits of my love and labour? Now especially I want to love this country better that ever!"

I wish this coin spreads the legacy of Charles IV not only in the Czech Republic but also in Europe and perhaps around the whole world.
