He would love to travel all over the UK - and the world. I can’t travel very far but I am hoping Desert Orchid will be able to travel further than I ever will be able to.

About This Item

Desert Orchid Travel Bug

Desert Orchid was an English racehorse who raced in the 1980s and early 1990s. He achieved iconic status within National Hunt racing, where he was much loved by supporters for his front-running attacking style, iron will and extreme versatility. Due to his striking grey coat (which became lighter as he got older as is the norm with grey horses), his front running style and his enthusiastic and often exuberant leaps at fences, he stood out in his races and was always easy to spot! He was also a very sound and robust horse, competing in 70 races across 9 seasons, winning 34 times and being placed in a further 19 races. No horse since Desert Orchid has repeatedly and successfully conceded weight to his rivals at the highest level.

Desert Orchid retired from racing aged 12 in 1991. He sadly died of old age aged 27. A statue in his honour can be found next to the paddock at Kempton Park racecourse near to where his ashes were buried. Flowers are placed under his statue every Christmas by an anonymous racegoer.
