Belgium is situated in the west of Europe, bordered to the north by the Netherlands, to the east by Germany and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and to the south and the west by France. Although its surface area of 30,528 km2 makes it a small country, its location has made it the economic and urban nerve centre of Europe.
Belgium spans 2 degrees in latitude, from 51 degrees 30 minutes N at Meerle (northernmost point) to 49 degrees 30 minutes N at Torgny (southernmost point). In longitude, it spans less than 4 degrees, from 2 degrees 33 minutes E to 6 degrees 24 minutes E.There are three Regions. The names of the three regional institutions are borrowed from the name of the territory they represent. So we refer to (from north to south) the Flemish Region, the Brussels-Capital Region and the Walloon Region.In addition to the three Regions, the Federal State has three Communities. They are based on the "language". So we talk about the Flemish, French and German-speaking Communities. The territory of the CommunitiesThe Flemish Community exercises its powers in the Flemish provinces and in Brussels, the French Community in the Walloon provinces, with the exception of German-speaking communes, and in Brussels, the German-speaking Community in the communes of the province of Liège that form the German language area.
La Belgique est composée de 3 régions, du nord au sud, on parle de la Région flamande, de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale et de la Région wallonne. La Belgique s'étend en latitude sur 2 degrés, 51°30' au point le plus au nord (Meerle) et 49°30' au point le plus au sud (Torgny). Elle compte moins de 4 degrés en longitude, 2°33' au point le plus à l'ouest (La Panne) et 6°24' au point le plus à l'est (Manderfeld). Le centre géographique de la Belgique se situe à Nil-Saint-Vincent (entité de Walhain), dans le Brabant wallon, à 50°38' de latitude nord et 04°40' de longitude est. Au même niveau que l'État fédéral et les régions, se trouvent les communautés. La Belgique fédérale comprend trois communautés: la Communauté française, la Communauté flamande et la Communauté germanophone. L'existence des ces collectivités est basée sur la notion de "langue". Le territoire des communautés La Communauté française exerce ses compétences dans les provinces wallonnes, déduction faite des communes germanophones, et à Bruxelles; la Communauté flamande exerce ses compétences dans les provinces flamandes et à Bruxelles; la Communauté germanophone exerce ses compétences dans les communes de la région de langue allemande, toutes situées dans la province de Liège.
