Sir Francis Drake Travel Bug

 

2017 marks the 440th and 50th anniversaries of the achievements of two of Devon’s most famous sailors.

 

On 13 December 1577, Sir Francis Drake set off from Plymouth aboard The Pelican, later renamed The Golden Hinde, on a voyage to sail around the world.

 

On 28 May 1967, Sir Francis Chichester returned to Plymouth in Gipsy Moth IV having successfully sailed single-handedly around the world thereby becoming the first person to do so, sailing West to East.

 

Sir Francis Drake arrived back in Plymouth on 26 September 1580 having taken 2 years 9 months to complete his voyage. Sir Francis Chichester completed his circumnavigation of the world in just 226 days.

 

To commemorate these events, the Sir Francis Drake and the Sir Francis Chichester travel bugs are being released by Devon Mega 2017 to see how far round the world they can travel and then return home in time for the Devon Mega event in August 2017.

 

If you should come across either travel bug, please keep it moving, the further and faster the better.
