About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

Visited 9/21/2013 sandlanders took it to 2013 WGA Geo-Picnic Wisconsin - 16.12 miles  Visit Log

Another WGA event for the nerd coin. Had its eye on all the food, but the nerd stayed far away from the baby snapping turtles so that it didn't become food itself! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    • nerd coin at the event
    • nerd coin hides out near the food table
    • Watch out for the snappers, nerd coin!
Visited 9/21/2013 sandlanders took it to LettermanTripped Wisconsin - 955.18 miles  Visit Log

Thought the nerd coin would like to visit a cache located at a place called Daves Falls Park. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Let's hope that if Dave does ever fall (off his bike), he is wearing a helmet to protect his noggin! We kept the nerd coin from jumping into the whitewater here. It wasn't wearing a helmet.

    • nerd coin checking out Daves Falls
    • How's that for a slip-n-slide?
    • nerd coin "on the rocks" near the cache location
Visited 8/24/2013 sandlanders took it to RAC: The Return of Bushwhack! Wisconsin - 264.48 miles  Visit Log

The nerd coin went on a long bushwhack with me to do some cache maintenance in Roche-A-Cri Park today.
I had to do all the work! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Visited 8/16/2013 sandlanders took it to Home Sweet Home Iowa - 596.67 miles  Visit Log

Another Iowa cache for the nerd coin as we were heading "Home Sweet Home" from our trip to Colorado. This would be our last cache find for the 2500 miles that we did. Care to go visit zoesbrother one of these day, nerd coin? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Visited 8/16/2013 sandlanders took it to Global Positioning System Monitoring Station Nebraska - 253.54 miles  Visit Log

Had to get the nerd coin to a Nebraska cache on this trip, and this was one of only two that we did. Wonder if zoesbrother can solve the puzzle for this โ” cache?

One last Colorado cache for the nerd coin... and it's a TB hotel!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Relax... the nerd coin just "visited" this location, and didn't check in. Still traveling with us. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

    • Yes, zoesbrother... Those are sunflowers!
Visited 8/14/2013 sandlanders took it to Moraine Park Colorado - 4.55 miles  Visit Log

One last cache in the park before we head back east tomorrow. The nerd coin came out to say, "Good-by" to the mountains and the scenery we have been enjoying here the past couple of days.

    • nerd coin looking at Moraine Park That big long stretch of dark green is the tree-covered south lateral moraine here.
Visited 8/14/2013 sandlanders took it to Glaciation at Bear Lake Colorado - 10.52 miles  Visit Log

Our last full day in Rocky Mountain National Park saw us visiting Bear Lake and hiking the trial around it. The nerd coin thought there would be real bears there and was too afraid to come out for a photo.

(Yeah, we just forgot to take one here...)

    • mountain view across Bear Lake
    • Not a squirrel, but close enough, zoesbrother!
Visited 8/13/2013 sandlanders took it to Alpine Visitor Center Cirque Colorado - 63.35 miles  Visit Log

Took the nerd coin up to the top on our Trail Ridge Road drive today. Ran into some snow, so the nerd coin opted to stay in the car where it was warm and dry.
