About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

Nice view of the Natchez Trace Parkway from this overlook area.

The day was getting late, and the nerd coin missed our entrance into Mississippi. Since we didn't want to disturb its rest, we took some photos to show the nerd coin what it missed here at Sunken Cave. (Secretly, we think the nerd coin is afraid of caves.)

Visited 4/8/2013 sandlanders took it to Natchez Trace VIRTUAL Cache Alabama - 6.45 miles  Visit Log

The Natchez Trace Parkway has no advertising signs and no commercial vehicles along its length, but it is a bicycle route, and we saw quite a few cyclists during the time we were driving it (at no more than 50 mph). All the riders were wearing helmets.

The nerd coin came with us at the first stop we made on the Trace and took a walk across some stepping stones and along the edge of a beaver pond.

Another place where helmets are important. The nerd coin visited this cache at the football field here in northwest Alabama.

No helmets for the soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Many young men from our part of Wisconsin lost their lives at the battle of Shiloh, so the nerd coin came along with us to pay respects to them and to all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Friendship, Wisconsin, to Friendship, Tennessee. Taking our glittery teal-colored friend to this cache today. There's a designated bike lane along the road near here, so we thought this would be a good representative cache to find for the nerd coin.

We did three caches in a unique part of Kentucky as the sun was going down. The nerd coin slept through them all and didn't pose for any photos. Said it was past its bedtime and why were we still on the road?

We had to take the nerd coin to this wonderful rest stop that we had visited twice before, once in 1989 and again in 2002. This would be our first cache in Kentucky, but not the nerd coin's. After all, it DID have a life before it hooked up with us! 😎

What views were to be found at the spectacular Garden of the Gods! The nerd coin and Mr. Sandlanders were posing for the camera around every turn! Some of the people were straying off the designated trails, though, and they were pretty close to the edge of some steep drop-offs... without any helmets on! 😮

    • first view of the fantastic rock formations
    • Watch out for the drop-offs!

Visited 4/7/2013 sandlanders took it to Caching America Challenge - Border to Border Illinois - 76.29 miles  Visit Log

We figure that since the nerd coin went with us to all of the states and caches that we are listing to qualify for this challenge cache, the nerd coin could claim a find here, too. We wonder if the nerd coin is more traveled than its owner now... 😈
