Dear Mr. Stall,

I thought I would report to you that Buffy has left us winging his way to his next adventure (a hint: it will be summertime there).

Buffy was a bit restless before he left, concerned that he had come so far and had not actually seen the three most Holy sites, so he went on a second trip.

  1. Picture 1 shows him at the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (it was filled with pilgrims and tourists from around the world, who had come to be in Jerusalem during the Christmas season).

  2. The second picture is at the Western Wall, which in Hebrew is the Kotel Hama’rav , it is not usually referred to as the “wailing wall”. If you look closely, to the left of the flag, just above the heads of those praying, you will see a tall 9 branched menorah called a Chanukiah, which is used in celebrations of Chanukah, the “Feast of Lights”. Buffy was visiting on the second day of Chanukah and had great fun eating one of the traditional foods, jelly filled doughnuts called “sufganiot”.

  3. Just above the Western wall, which is the retaining wall of the now destroyed temple is where the two building of importance to the Muslim people are located. Picture 3 shows Buffy with both sites the golden domed “Dome of the Rock” on the left and the “silver domed” Al-Aksa Mosque on the right.

  4. Picture 4 shows a better view of the Oldest Muslim building in the world, finished in 691as a Shrine for Muslim Pilgrims and is not a mosque or place of public worship. (all the people in the lower left hand corner are in the plaza in front of the Western wall, which is just behind the brown roofed entrance ramp to the Temple Mount)

  5. Picture 5 shows the Al-Aksa Mosque better, there is often confusion and the Dome of the Rock is often thought to be the Al-Aksa Mosque.

  6. Picture 6, Buffy wanted me to send you, even though the quality is very poor. As you can see it was very windy and a bit cold (about 40-45 F) and there was a kind of sandstorm where very fine sand particles are blown in the wind making visibility poor and you feel grit in your teeth. Anyway after the very sweet Sufganiot, Buffy needed some real food so I took her to some hills overlooking a little sleepy town just south of Jerusalem, again there was no room in the inn at this place because Christian Pilgrims had been streaming into this town for the last week anticipating the celebrations which would be taking place that very evening. Buffy was grazing in the same hills overlooking Bethlehem on the very same night of the year in which the shepherds were watching over their flocks by night some 2000 years earlier. He said it kind of made his fur tingle. You unfortunately don’t see it but the village of Beit Lechem (house of bread) or Bethlehem is just down in the haze.

  7. The very last picture shows the street sign on the way to Bethlehem, which is Bethlehem Road.

In one of the pictures you might note that Buffy bought himself a little remembrance of his visit in Israel.

We wish Buffy and your class a Happy New Year and hope you enjoy the rest of his journey,

Kern Wisman

I am pleased to inform you that we have recently received a houseguest from Gibbon, Nebraska. Buffy arrived a few days ago, as you can imagine the jet lag was such that it took a few days to get oriented, but today we went for a walk near the “Old City” of Jerusalem, I have enclosed pictures which show him outside the old city walls where the Jaffa gate can be seen as well as the minaret which many refer to as the “Tower of David”, which is found inside the walls which hold three of the holiest sites to three of the world great religions. Here you can find the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site Christians revere as the place where Jesus was resurrected, the Western Wall or “Kotel”, the most holy site for the Jewish people, the last remnant of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem and the El Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock, the third most holy site in Islam from which it is believed that Muhammad ascended to heaven.

My name is Kern Wisman and my wife is Barbara, We are good friends of Mr. Dumas, your principal, and his parents, as we used to live in North Platte, Nebraska. My wife and I are volunteers at the international headquarters of the Bahá'í Faith which are located in Haifa Israel. It is my responsibility, though, to live close to the government offices and ministries and be the representative of the Bahá'í Faith living in Jerusalem.

As you can see Buffy found friendly people who share a common appreciation for a certain college football team. He wanted me to tell you that he would be leaving here soon for another country, but thought you might enjoy the surprise of “where” for after he arrives there.

Go Big Red!
