Im Mittelpunkt steht die kleine, liebenswerte, aber eigentlich veraltete Dampflok Rusty und ihr Kampf gegen die eigentlich übermächtigen Gegner in Form der hypermodernen E-Lok Electra und der mächtigen Diesellok Greaseball. Hierbei spielt insbesondere die Liebe zum 1.-Klasse-Waggon Pearl eine besondere Rolle. Denn als diese vor die Entscheidung gestellt wird, mit wem sie die Rennen bestreiten soll, mit Rusty oder Electra, weiß sie nicht, für wen sie sich entscheiden soll. Am Ende gewinnt Rusty sowohl das Rennen als auch Pearl für sich.
