About This Item

Best of Scuba Manta - Dolphin - Shark

One of the most spectacular experiences in scuba diving is an encounter with wild dolphins. I do not mean the starved imprisoned creatures you meet at SeaWorld, but real wild dolphins. I will never forget that moment. It was during a one week diving safari in the Red Sea, just around the Egyptian-Sudanese border, heading north, that we anchored near Samadai.  It was in the afternoon 20 October 2003. As anchoring and diving was prohibited inside the Samadai Laguna we had to go snorkeling. We were told that in this Laguna a large group of Spinner dolphins was living. During daytime they were out at sea, hunting, but at the end of the day they tended to return home. To Samadai. We waited for about 40 minutes and almost decided to return to the ship when they arrived. They suddenly appeared from out of nowhere, a group of 40-50 dolphins, passed us at high speed. Then they were gone. My heart was racing. Then five minutes later they returned. Slowly and cautiously. Curiously. Approaching us. Investigating us (see gallery photo). Circling around us at an arm length. Making eye contact with us. That was undoubtedly the supreme moment. When you make eye contact with a wild dolphin out of mutual interest and curiosity. It is something impossible to describe. You immediately sense the intellect of these special creatures. After the encounter, which must have lasted about five minutes, although it felt like hours, they left as quickly as they came. Leaving us breathless and out of our heads of excitement.
