A replica of this bug has been released by Hampshire County Council in southern England, from their Geocaching Event held at Farley Mount Country Park, near Winchester, Hampshire. The original is being kept to show around schools. It's travels will be followed by school children within Hampshire.
We would like it to travel the world to see and be photographed next to as many landmarks as possible. This will show all the school children some of the sights around the world. It would also be great to be photographed with other school children.
The purple emperor butterfly is only found in central southern England, and Hampshire is one of it's stongholds. They lay their eggs on sallow or goat willow and the green caterpillars hibernate on sallow twigs. It is only the male butterfly that has the iridescent sheen that gives them their name.
