Current Goal

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated.  I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

Zwenkrau, Sachsen, Germany

The original large glass bead was taken and a small item was was put in a plastic bag with the original tag.

This is one of a series of heart-shaped items obtained from different places and converted into travel bugs. They are named either for the places of their origin or for Texas Panhandle-South Plains towns with interesting names or histories.

Quitaque, locally pronounced Kitty-quay, is a city in Briscoe County. The population was 432 at the 2000 census. Comanchero trader José Piedad Tafoya is said to have been the first settler in the area. He operated a trading post from 1865 to 1867, his main customers the Comanches.

In 1877 the Lazy F Ranch was formed when George Baker arrived with a herd of cattle. Charles Goodnight, the former Texas Ranger and trail driver, bought the ranch in 1880 and renamed it Quitaque, which someone had convinced him meant "end of the trail." Others say the name was derived from two buttes in the area that resembled piles of horse manure, the real meaning of the word. A third translation supposedly means "whatever one steals."

A post office was established in 1882 and eight years later the town had forty residents. When Briscoe County was organized the townsite was platted. A school was opened in 1894 and moved to Quitaque in 1902. Trail service was achieved in 1928 but lasted only a few years.
