Current Goal

These Trackable Austrian Wood GeoCoins (AWC) send greetings from an Austrian GeoCacher Team to GeoCachers and Caches all around the globe, hopefully.

If you find me in a cache or get me from another cacher, then please track me with a discovery, telling about where and when you received me. Afterwards you are free to either keep me and perhaps start collecting WoodCoins or drop me into another cache or give away to another cacher again just as you like. Perhaps you just might like to write a note once you have put this trackable trade-item into a cache.

Please do not grab me, just discover me, as I am either one of the first (2015), second (2017) or third (2018) series of 120 copies each.
Only the owners can be in the possession of the original master.

About This Item

Looking into the vast sea together with the Lundis

Our first Austrian WoodCoin is made of wood, of course, engraved by laser, and shows 2 Lundis / Puffins / "Papageientaucher", putting their beaks together.

Why is an Austrian GeoCacher Team formed by 2 Lundis (Puffins)?
Lundi is Islandic for Puffins.

The whole story is about a magical and lonely encounter with Puffins around midnight at the westernmost point of Europe (politically, not geologically) on Iceland.

We were on a roadtrip during our first journey to Iceland, at the very beginning of our life as travellers and GeoCachers, on the late evening July, 23rd, 2010, within the Westfjords of Iceland, near Latrabjarg (and the following hours of the morning of July, 24th).  After a long and heavy day of driving on much too "interesting" roads within the spectacular northern landscape, we finally arrived at our hotel "at the end of the world".

Knowing that we had only one night this place, we decided to go to the Westernmost Lighthouse of Europe, pay a visit to the EarthCache there and have a chance to experience the really endless sunset and -rise from one of those " westernmost points" of Europe.

And so we drove another (quite or too) speedy 75 mins towards Southwest on unpaved and curvy roads with our brave, much too small and not so cheap rental car.

Was it worth the effort?
Oh, yes, we did have the endless sunset at the westernmost lighthouse - on our own. Very lonely and very beautiful.

After enjoying it for a while we asked ourselves, whether we would have the least chance to see some Puffins (or Lundis) here (there should be a chance according to our guidebook). We had only seen them from far on the ferry to the Westfjords until now, but we always wanted to get closer. So we went up a slight cliff South-East of the lighthouse, without too much of expectations.

And all of a sudden, there they were, hundreds or thousends of them. Sitting peacefully. Looking towards the open sea from their grassy homes. Seemingly thinking about whatever truth lies in this endless sunset or sunrise over there, just as we did before.

We could get very close, for very long and watch them, peacefully, lying relaxed on our stomachs in the grass. Our Lundis sitting just 2 or 3 meters away.

We almost forgot to leave from there.

In the light of the falling and rising sun we felt a little bit of eternity together with the Lundis.

From this day on, the Lundis are guiding our travels.

From Island to Island after Island.
