African Lion is from South Africa and he wants to travel the world......he is happy to go wherever you want to take him......the further the better as he wants to travel more miles than his other animal friends who are leaving home in Cape Town at the same time.
Best of all he would like some memories of his travels so if you can post a picture of him that show any of the places he has visited on his travels, he would really love that.
If you can it would be so cool to bring African Lion with you back to Cape Town South Africa when you visit our MEGA event (GC5YRDE) on 1 October 2016 with a full week of geocaching events.....Remember to log your intention to attend and visit owner of African Lion at www.leopardstone.co.za.
The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa including the transvaal or white lion in South Africa and the masai lion in East Africa.
The West African lion population is particularly endangered. The Barbary lion sometimes referred to as the Atlas lion, was an African lion population native to North Africa, ranging from Morocco to Egypt and including the Atlas Mountains, that is now considered extinct in the wild. It is believed that the last wild Barbary lion was killed in 1942.
The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a major population decline during the second half of the 20th century. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the main reasons for this decline.
Some private landowners in South Africa breed lions for the purpose of trophy hunting, otherwise known as "canned" hunting because the lion has no chance of escape being fenced into a relatively small area and being tracked by a vehicle and a high velocity rifle with telescopic sight.
Lion populations are not tenable outside designated reserves and national parks, therefore valuable land wanted by a growing human population, has to be given up to game reserves. Lions are also often not wanted by private reserves on a small budget as they eat the other animals which are valuable assets!
