About This Item

Argo Navis Vorderseite

This is my most beautiful coin. It's the 10th year anniversary compass rose geocoin. The compass rose has 8 Swarovksi stones and in the middle a relief of the sun and the moon. On the back it shows the constellation of Argo Navis, the ship Argo travelling in which Jason was to get back the Golden Fleece (Greek mythology). The name was given by Ptolemaios although the constellation could not be seen in its entirety in Greece at his time, but only South of 32 degrees of latitude which would be the coast of Africa, Iran (Persia), or Irak (Mesopotamia). Today it would be the biggest constellation of all but has been separated into three constellations in modern times: Carina (keel), Puppis (afterdeck) and Vela (sail). Pyxis ( compass) used to be a part of the mast of the ship and is now a constellation of its own. The constellation is depicted by silver dots in a glittering night sky. THe ship is a metallic shiny red and its design goes back to the drawing of the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in his catalogue of stars from 1690. The corona of zodiac signs is a reminder of the zodiac sign drawings in that same catalogue.
