Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 10,000 newborns. There are currently about 900 children and adults with this disease in the Czech Republic.

PKU is not contagious, the patient is born with it and the disease is detected during newborn screening (blood sampling from the baby's heel)

Untreated PKU can lead to severe mental retardation.

A person with PKU does not have one of the enzymes in the liver that breaks down one of the amino acids contained in all plant and animal proteins.

The disease is treated with a lifelong very strict diet, when it is forbidden to eat the vast majority of common foods, with the exception of some types of fruit and vegetables.

A person with PKU cannot digest all flours, pasta, all types of baked goods (including gluten-free), all types of meat and meat products, dairy products, legumes, nuts and seeds, cocoa, chocolate...

Patients with PKU are mostly dependent on very expensive food substitutes, which are not covered by health insurance.

Fenylketonurie(PKU) je dědičné metabolické onemocnění, které postihuje zhruba 1 z 10.000 nově narozených dětí.  V současné době je v ČR asi 900 dětí a dospělých s touto nemocí.

PKU není nakažlivá, nemocný se s ní narodí a nemoc se zachytí při novorozeneckém screeningu (odběr krve z patičky dítěte)

Neléčená PKU může vést až k těžké mentální retardaci. 

Člověku s PKU nefunguje v játrech jeden z enzymů, který štěpí jednu z aminokyselin obsažených ve všech rostlinných i živočišných bílkovinách. 

Nemoc se léčí celoživotní velmi přísnou dietou, kdy je zakázáno jíst valnou většinu běžných potravin, s výjimkou některých druhů ovoce a zeleniny. 

Člověk s PKU nesmí veškeré mouky, těstoviny, všechny druhy pečiva (včetně bezlepkových), všechny druhy masa a masných výrobků, mléčné výrobky, luštěniny, ořechy a semínka, kakao, čokoládu....

Pacienti s PKU jsou odkázání z valné většiny na velmi drahé náhražky potravin, které ale nejsou hrazeny ze zdravotního pojištění.
