Wombatwandering took it to Meet & Greet the Catalans (London 3)

Some lovely Catalan cachers were in London so I took you to meet them. They come over every now and again to see a few shows and find a few caches. We always meet in Leicester Square, the location of nationally significant cinemas such as the Odeon Luxe and Empire, which are often used for film premieres. The square was originally a gentrified residential area, with tenants including Frederick, Prince of Wales and the artists William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds. 🎥

The London cachers went on a day trip to the White Cliffs of Dover. The sea cliffs are composed of chalk deposited during the Late Cretaceous (100 and 66 million years ago) when Great Britain and much of Europe were submerged under a great sea. You walked between Dover and Folkestone before taking the train back to London. 🎒

Chasing various caches for challenges or calendars and Wanstead in London’s north east looked like the perfect spot. Except I got it confused with Walthamstow and went there instead. Clearly I am no good with this side of London. Walthamstow was home to the popular 1990s boy band East 17, who named themselves after the area's postal code E17, and titled their debut album Walthamstow. 🫣

A surprise FTF for me here as I took you caching between the museums at South Kensington and Battersea Park. You went past the homes of A.A. Milne, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, George Eliot, and Mark Twain along the way. 🧛

Into Holborn for an event to celebrate Goldpot finishing his event calendar. Goldpot is the social butterfly of London cachers although he doesn’t even live in London. Holborn has been associated with the legal professions since mediaeval times, and the name of the local militia (now Territorial Army unit, the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry) still reflects that. The unit is nicknamed the Devil's Own, a name given by George III, not due to ferocity in battle, but rather to his dislike of lawyers. 🎊

A spot of calendar filling for me so you tagged along to the London neighbourhood of Chelsea. The exclusivity of Chelsea as a result of its high property prices historically resulted in the coining of the term "Sloane Ranger" in the 1970s to describe some of its residents, and some of those of nearby areas. Chelsea is home to one of the largest communities of Americans living outside the United States, with 6.53% of Chelsea residents having been born in the U.S. 👛

The London Geocachers headed to Steeple Morden in Cambridgeshire for a group outing. The aim was half of the Moggy geoart series. Very wet to start with and some heavy rain but it eventually cleared. An airfield opened at RAF Steeple Morden in 1938. It began as a satellite of the base at RAF Bassingbourn and was later used by the 355th Fighter Group of the USAAF. The site of the airfield is now a farm although the concrete taxiways and runways still remain. 🐈⬛

Time for a visit to Tower Hill. It is infamous for the public execution of high status prisoners from the late 14th to the mid 18th century. The execution site on the higher ground north-west of the Tower of London moat is now occupied by Trinity Square Gardens. Then you crossed Tower Bridge but got caught by the bridge opening to let a boat go under. ⚰️

Out to Ealing in West London for a birthday event of sorts to the United Kingdom’s oldest Wherigo, “Where I Went, Hugo” (GC18FP7). It’s 6000 days old, or nearly 25 years. By 1902 Ealing had become known as the "Queen of the Suburbs" due to its greenery, and because it was halfway between city and country. Nowadays, it’s fully suburban and no more green than anywhere else in London. 🧁

I had not driven my car for some time so we headed to an event on a farm at Maple Cross, Hertfordshire, to the north west of London. Found some caches along the Grand Union Canal, the principal navigable waterway between London and the Midlands, then doubled back past this particular cache which is where the Jackson Studios were once located. Motörhead recorded one of the most iconic British rock songs, "Ace of Spades" there in 1980. Other artists who recorded at the studios include Dr. Feelgood, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Girlschool, UFO, Nick Lowe, The Pirates, Elton John and Ian Dury. 🎸
