About This Item
This “Star” series of travel bugs is to bring attention to my favorite movie actors. Some have awards, some do not. There is no criterion to be included as a favorite beyond I will watch anything that has her/him in it.
Mercedes J. Ruehl was born in 1948 Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1992 for The Fisher King. Her father was of German and Irish descent and her mother was of Cuban and Irish ancestry. Ruehl began her career in regional theatre with the Denver Center Theatre Company, taking odd jobs between engagements. Her first starring role on Broadway came in 1984. She is first and foremost an actress of the stage. However, she was great as the mentally deranged and overbearing Connie Russo in Married to the Mob (1988), the mentally challenged, protective, loving, and adventurous Bella in Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers (1993) and the dying and determined title-character in Roseanna's Grave (1997).
