Current GOAL

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated.  I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

annecollage2

We bought some postcards at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. I photographed two of them, printed then laminated them to make this travel bug. The image on one side of the bug is a montage of two photos of Anne taken apparently at a single sitting, possibly around age 13. The image on the other side of the TB shows facing pages of part of her diary (search under "Diary of a Young Girl."). Anne wanted to see the world.

The Anne Frank Museum includes the building where her parents, sister and members of two other families went into hiding for two years after the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1942. They were betrayed, captured by the Nazis and sent to prison camps. The diary Anne kept during the period of hiding was left behind and later recovered by one of the people who had secretly supplied them with food. Her father was the only family member who survived the war--Anne died of typhus only weeks before the camp she was in (Bergen-Belsen) was liberated by the allies.

Under her father's direction, the rooms and furnishings of the hideout were restored to the conditions at the time of capture. These rooms are part of the museum. I first read the diary almost 60 years ago and it had a profound effect on me. I was amazed that that such a document could survive the war, but more than that the diary resonated with me because I read it at age 15, the same age as Anne when she wrote it. My adolescent angst was nothing by comparison.
