Current GOAL

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean, preserves the tracking number and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated.  I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

This is one of a series of large beads obtained from different places and converted into travel bugs.  They are named for Texas towns with interesting names or histories.  Much of the text is from the online Handbook of Texas or

Big Lump was a lignite-mining community on the International-Great Northern Railroad four miles west of Milano in southeastern Milam County.  The name came about, apparently for the lumps of coal that was being mined.  A post office opened in 1912.  In 1914 Big Lump had a cotton gin, a general store, and as many as 400 residents, as well as the lignite mine. The increase in oil and gas production in Texas nearly eliminated the lignite market in the 1920s.  The post office at Big Lump was discontinued in 1924, and most residents moved away. No evidence of the community remained on county highway maps in 1988.
