Current Goal

I maintain records on my trackables. They have the goal to circulate more than five years and to be moved by at least 25 cachers. That is a target rate of five drops per year for five years, or a drop every 73 days. The average drop rate of my trackables in the US is 124 days, in Europe it is 71 days. As of 4-Apr-23 this trackable had survived for 4.6 years and had been moved by 28 cachers, for an average drop every 60 days. Please keep it moving, then drop it in a safe place!

No permission is needed to leave the U.S. While in the U.S., please drop it in a Premium Member only OR a rural cache near a busy trail or road. Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event where there is no security. Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and dry, protects the number and prevents tangling with other items. Otherwise, take the trackable anywhere you wish.

About This Item

This is one of a series of large beads obtained from different places and converted into travel bugs.  They are named for Texas towns with interesting names or histories.  Much of the text is from the online Handbook of Texas, Wikipedia or texasescapes.com. I have small to large connections to most of them, having visited or worked nearby.

San Benito is in Cameron County, the southern-most county of the state. The area is a delta of the Rio Grande and as such it has many oxbow lakes, locally called recacas. San Benito is called the Resaca City because one large channel runs through the town. The resaca remains bank-full now because it carries water for irrigation.

I worked in San Benito for 10 years, starting in the mid-70s. The first fajitas and breakfast burritos I ever ate were in that town, the latter at the landmark Stonewall Jackson Hotel, located a half block from our office. The hotel once bordered on classy but, while retaining a good bit of charm, it was even then clearly destined for hard times.

San Benito is the home town of the country singer Freddy Fender. While going through marital problems and staying at the Stonewall Jackson, he wrote his most famous hit songs.
