The creek is now clear. The acid drainage is caused by the presence of sulfide minerals such as iron pyrite, or “fool’s gold.” The exposed iron sulfide mixes with water to become sulfuric acid. Microbes in the water increase the pH level.

Spooky Oak Spenceville Wildlife Area is on an
old copper mine. http://www.consrv.ca.gov/index/AboutUs/aboutUs_SpencevilleMine.htm
This article tells about the cleanup. It shows some interesting before and after pictures.
The pictures we took are of the oak forest in the area. We thought this was different enough from Florida and a special place for the travel bug.
