The academic building This former Abbey is one of the few religious buildings that survived the 80-year war with Spain. It now is the epicenter of Leiden University, and looks out over our 426-year-old botanical garden. Last year, in memory of the 400th anniversary of the pilgrim fathers leaving Leiden for the Americas, there was an exhibition of plants that early settlers took back with them to Europe.
