at the top of the cove is limestone pavement, the acid in rainwater has dissolved the limestone along the cracks, leaving this weird pattern of grooves and blocks.
Apparently part of one of the Harry Potter movies was filmed here.

The cove is limestone, it was a waterfall at the end of the ice age, but as limestone lets water soak in, and there is now less water needing to be drained away it is dry, the water runs underground.
