New Orleans is at or below sea level, resulting in a high water table in the soil. If a body or coffin is placed in an in-ground tomb in New Orleans, there is risk of it being water-logged or even displaced from the ground. For this reason, the people of New Orleans have generally used above-ground tombs. Personally, I think they look super cool! ?? Log image uploaded from Geocaching® app

Marie Laveau was a famous and powerful voodoo priestess who lived in New Orleans in the 19th century. Renowned in life and revered in death, some say she continues to work her magic from beyond the grave.
Laveau died in 1881, and is buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, in the tomb of her husband's family, the Glapions. People would scribble Xs on the whitewashed mausoleum in hopes Laveau will grant their wishes. A large fine is now in place for any visitor who attempts to write on the grave. ?? Designated by Congress as the official WWII museum of the United States, The National WWII Museum is located in downtown New Orleans. The National WWII Museum tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world, why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. USS Kidd (DD-661), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who died on the bridge of his flagship USS Arizona during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Kidd was the first US flag officer to die during World War II and the first American admiral ever to be killed in action. One interesting history at the Louisiana State Capitol was the location of the assassination of US Senator and former Louisiana Governor, Huey P. Long. Long was shot in the Capitol building in front of the governor’s office by Dr. Carl Weiss. In fact you can still see a bullet hole in one of the columns. Out front is a statue of Long. One of my recent travel goals that I have had the past few years is trying to visit all 50 State Capitol buildings. I am getting close to half way there so when I flew into New Orleans, I decided that I would rent a car and drive up to Baton Rouge to check off State Capitol #22 on my list! An American actress and singer. A muse of Rodgers and Hammerstein, she originated many leading roles on stage over her career, including Nellie Forbush in South Pacific (1949), the title character in Peter Pan (1954), and Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959). Visited the Parker County Courthouse today in Weatherford, Texas. This amazing courthouse is in the middle of a roundabout where the traffic goes around the historic courthouse. Took a drive today to Richardson, Texas to Breckenridge Park. They were having a large disc golfing tournament but while everyone was distracted, I snuck in the woods to find one of the oldest geocaches in Texas! It is amazing that after 23 years plus that these geocaches are still able to be found!! Super cool!

This was a fun find in a hole in a nearby tree. There is a limb that is sticking out that is attached to a pill bottle. Have you seen tombstones that look like a piece of wood? In 1890 Joseph Cullen Root founded Woodmen of the World, a fraternal benefit organization, the purpose of which was to make life insurance affordable to everyone. This is one of the strangest gravesites I have visited. In the middle of this industrial park that is surrounded by warehouses is a small graveyard named Ford Cemetery.
