29 Jul 07 View Image Avast ye Scurvy Dogs! and the SS Great Britain Built and launched in Bristol in 1843, Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s maritime masterpiece was the world’s first ocean-going, propeller driven iron ship. After serving as a luxury liner, a troop ship, a cargo vessel and finally a floating warehouse, she was abandoned in the Falklands Islands in 1937. She was salvaged in 1970 and towed back to Bristol where this historic vessel is being conserved for future generations under a ‘glass sea’ in the very dockyard where she was built. 29 Jul 07 View Image Avast ye Scurvy Dogs! and the Matthew The Matthew was a ship sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to Newfoundland. This replica, built in Bristol, sailed the same voyage on the 500th anniversary of the landmark voyage. On 24 June 1997 the replica of the Matthew was welcomed into port at Bonavista by Queen Elizabeth. 21 Jan 07 View Image Arrrrr!
