15 Jul 21 View Image Skull & the Gulf of California The Gulf of California, aka the Sea of Cortés or less commonly as the Vermilion Sea, is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean that separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It has a coastline of approximately 2,500 miles. 6 rivers flow into it, including the Colorado. The surface of the gulf is about 62,000 square miles. Maximum depths exceed 9,800’ because of the complex geology, linked to plate tectonics. The gulf is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on Earth.
