He was successful, and his great gift was founding, financing and fund raising for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which provides free care for desparately ill children. This is the entrance to the Clifford Davis Federal Building in downtown Memphis. Helm was a rising young lawyer of Louisville when the Civil War started. He rose to the rank of grigader-general for the southern cause and was killed at the battle of Chickamauga. He was the commander of the Orphan Brigade, 1st Kentucky Cavalry. The ist kentucky Cavalry was the oldest regiments in Confederate service. Benjamin Harden helm was it first commander, helm was the brother-in-law of Union president Abraham Lincoln. Its men were the first kentucky cavalerymen to respond to the call for service to the Confederate States. The 1st Ky served to the very end, as President Jeffersons Davis guard when he was captured in Georgia. Served with the Army of Tennessee under Joseph Wheeler and Gen Nathan Bedford Forest. 19 Aug 03 View Image John Larue Helm John Larue Helm was the Grandson of Thomas Helm. He was a governer of Kentucky, speaker of the house and senate and one of the most celebrated lawyers of Kentucky. John Larue Helm was the father of Benjamin Helm. 19 Aug 03 View Image Thomas Helm The upload pictures were taken in the Helm Cemetery not to far from downtown Elizabethtown KY. Thomas Helm was the grandfather of John Larue Helm. Thomas Helm was a prominent pioneer from Williams County Virginia. That settled in the Severns Valley of Hardin County (Elizabethtown). The garve stone that RD is setting on is the grave of Thomas Helm. Thomas Helm also served as a CPT in the 1st Virginia Reg. During the Revolutionary war.
