It has a coastline of approximately 2,500 miles. 6 rivers flow into it, including the Colorado. The surface of the gulf is about 62,000 square miles. Maximum depths exceed 9,800’ because of the complex geology, linked to plate tectonics. The gulf is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on Earth.
