Breda is een Nederlandse stad in het westen van de provincie Noord-Brabant. Breda is vanouds de voornaamste stad van West-Brabant en is de oude hoofdstad van de Baronie van Breda, waaronder onder meer de huidige steden Roosendaal, Etten-Leur en Oosterhout ressorteerden. De gemeente Breda telt anno 2014 180.053 inwoners en is daarmee in grootte de derde gemeente van Noord-Brabant en de negende gemeente van Nederland. De stad Breda telt ruim 147.000 inwoners.
Oranjestad
Door de historische band met het huis Nassau (tot 1795 waren de burgers van Breda onderdanen van de heer van Breda, die vanaf 1403 tevens graaf van Nassau en, vanaf 1538, de prins van Oranje-Nassau was) is Breda een Oranjestad, waaraan het mogelijk mede één van haar bijnamen, Haagje van het Zuiden, dankt. Breda heeft een belangrijke historische stadskern, die zich over de eeuwen heeft gevormd rond het kasteel van Breda, de zetel van de heren van Breda.
Historisch centrum
In de Bredase binnenstad, die in 2009 tot beste binnenstad van Nederland in de categorie grote steden werd gekroond, bevinden zich onder meer de gotische Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, het Begijnhof, het Spanjaardsgat, het Oude Stadhuis en de Prinsenkade. Zowel vanwege zijn historisch stadsschoon als om zijn fraaie, bosrijke omgeving wordt Breda in zijn volkslied ook wel de Parel van het Zuiden genoemd.
