So here we are at the grand finale of the MMCC series, well done to all those of you who have trekked around Chesterfield finding the first 7. The coordinates shown on the website for this mystery puzzle are not the actual ones. YOU WILL NEED TO FIND ALL THE FIRST 7 MMCC CACHES AND COLLECT THEIR CLUE CODES IN ORDER TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE BELOW FOR THE ACTUAL COORDINATES OF THE CACHE.
This last cache represents the modern pinnacle of media, combining computers and internet into the largest example of a truly multimedia age. Indeed where would we be without use of the internet for our very own geocaching.com, other than the original letterbox listings in informal booklets before true geocaching as we know it. All of the previous 7 forms of media can be experienced via the web and computers: downloading films, reading news bulletins, watching DVDs, copying files to/from USB drives, converting old videos to digital signals, uploading and editing old or new photos, and finally streaming live TV and radio directly to computer, tablet or mobile device. The internet has been around in primitive form since the 1950s but it wasn't until 1991 that Tim Berners-Lee helped developed the idea of a web of information that could be accessed from anywhere, rather than simply sending a block of information from one sysem to another. The term 'World Wide Web' was invented and by the mid 1990s many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were offering internet connections, albeit via dial-up phone line at first. Once broadband was developed and speeds improved dramatically we started to see the explosion of media traffic into our homes carrying so much more than pages of text or the odd photo.
To celebrate the internet, computers and geocaching.com this last bonus cache has its very own black box of information inside it. Within the box there is also the log sheet and pencil, plus a souvenir stamper for anyone who has a geocaching notepad or letterbox cache jotter pad with them. Unfortunately I wasn't able to classify this as a letterbox cache because it is a bonus mystery one, but there's a stamp to use anyway. Please leave this inside the box for other cachers to stamp. Additionally, as it's the bonus 8th one in the series there is a free souvenir for anyone who has found all 8. These souvenirs are in a separate bag within the cache, in 3 different designs, whilst stocks last! If there's a few of you caching (e.g. a family or group) then feel free to take one each as I have extra, just let me know if stocks are getting low and need topping up. The souvenir comes complete with a handy geocaching tool!?! There is a special version of this souvenir for the First To Find. Well done to the cats-eyes team for being world-wide web wonders and the first to find. If anyone also wants a virtual finders souvenir to attach to their profile page after finding all the series then please email me and I will mail you back the link and details.
The cache is a large enough box to hide trackables in and has a few swappables to start off with too. As it's a large box please keep it well concealed after finding it. The container is in a rather well camouflaged bag and hidden behind a tree, just a few metres off a path. It has been placed with the permission of the Linacre Reservoir office, and although it is not on one of the main paths around the reservoir the path does show on some geocaching app maps. Parts of the path can be quite muddy if it's been wet recently so choose which way you approach it from. If you are coming here by car please be aware there is a parking charge of £1.50 for up to 2 hours or £3.00 for the day.
Now for the coordinates......
N 53° AB.CDE W 1° FG.HJK
Each of the digits A to K can be found by substituting the clue codes below. In some cases there is a simple sum in brackets, e.g. (vii-v) means subtracting the number you got from cache MMCC (v) away from cache MMCC (vii). Each of the answers will then be a single digit. The solutions are:
- A = vi
- B = iv
- C = (i-v-iii)
- D = (v-vii)
- E = (i-vi)
- F = (v-ii)
- G = vii
- H = ii
- J = (iii+vi)
- K = (iv-iii)
If you want to check your co-ordinates before going looking for the cache, please use the geocheck link below to see if you are correct. GOOD LUCK!
I hope you can find the cache in good order now that you have come this far, and that you have enjoyed your multimedia journey along the way.
