The Sentier de Grande Randonée GR1 NC, or the Great Trekking Trail, is a (at present) seven stage hike across the lower half of New Caledonia. It begins at the abandoned forced labor mining town of Prony and proceeds north and west to end at the newer dam of Dumbea. You can read about the entire GR1, in English or French, right here.
My daughter and I will attempt to walk all seven stages over the next few months. We have completed Stage 1 and Stage 2 and Stage 3. A couple of months before we started, we placed a cache to mark the start of the GR1: Au debut de GR1.
This stage is officially 15.1 km and should, according to the description, require 7.5 hours to complete. In fact, this stage is by far the most difficult of all the stages on the GR1. We hiked for more than 8 hours but had to stop for the night at a Refuge that was still 3.7 km from the official end point (geotrack of our hike of Stages 6 and 7 can be found here). There are two large river sections you must cross which are very difficult even when there has not been much rain lately. One of them, shown in this cache page's background image, would be impossible after a rainfall. Realistically, one must plan to hike Stages 6 and 7 consecutively and camp at one of the refuges in between. We elected to stop at Camp des Fougères, which has two sleeping shelters and a covered picnic shelter. The following morning, a tropical cyclone arrived (Cyclone Solo) and we had a difficult time completing this stage and, especially, Stage 7. The geocache placed for this Stage is actually a couple of km past the end of Stage 6 - this happened because of the difficult conditions for hiking and we could not find a hiding area that was not flooded. Le Sentier de Grande Randonée GR1 NC, ou le Grand Trail Trekking, est une randonnée (à l'heure actuelle) de sept étapes dans la moitié inférieure de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Elle commence au travail forcé ville minière abandonnée de Prony et procède au nord et à l'ouest à la fin du plus récent au barrage de Dumbéa. Ma fille et moi tenteront de marcher tous les sept étapes au cours des prochains mois. Nous avons terminé Étape 1, Étape 2 et Étape 3. Un couple de mois avant que nous commencions, nous avons placé un cache pour marquer le début de la GR1: Au debut de GR1.
Cette étape est officiellement 15,1 km et devrait, selon la description, nécessitera 7,5 heures pour terminer. En fait, ce stade est de loin la plus difficile de toutes les étapes sur le GR1. Il y a deux sections de la rivière grandes vous devez franchir qui sont très difficiles même quand il n'y a pas eu beaucoup de pluie ces derniers temps. L'un d'eux, montré en arrière-plan de l'image de cette page de cache, serait impossible après une pluie. De façon réaliste, il faut planifier la randonnée étapes 6 et 7 consécutivement et camp à l'un des refuges entre les deux. Nous avons choisi d'arrêter à Camp des Fougères, qui a deux abris de couchage et un abri de pique-nique couverte. Le lendemain matin, un cyclone tropical est arrivé (Cyclone Solo) et nous avons eu un moment difficile de remplir ce stade et, en particulier, l'étape 7. La géocache placé pour cette étape est en fait un couple de km après la fin de la phase 6 - cela est arrivé parce des conditions difficiles pour la randonnée et nous ne pouvions pas trouver une zone de la clandestinité qui n'a pas été inondé.
