I realize that I have already hidden a lot of geocaches in this
area but I decided that it could stand at least one more. This one
is hidden in a remote part of State Gamelands #51 near Elk Rock
which is on the Pennsylvania Geological Survey list of “Outstanding
Scenic Geological Features of Pennsylvania”. Choose a clear day for
this one. The view is fantabulous.
Directions: Some of you will remember that this is also
the way to get to the Liston
School Road cache. Follow Dunbar-Ohiopyle Road for
approximately 5 miles from Dunbar and turn onto Kingan Hill Road by
going straight when the main road makes a hairpin turn to the
right. Follow this road and your GPS to a Pennsylvania State
Gamelands parking area at 39° 56.549', -79° 31.293'. There was a
town of sorts at this site in 1815 (ironworks) and again in 1900
(logging camp). Cross a footbridge and continue on a good road to
Elk Rocks at 39° 57.080', -79° 32.560'. It will be worth your while
to stop here to explore the rocks. You will be due for a rest after
climbing up the hill. Look for the names of previous visitors
carved into the rocks. It is evidence that there were a lot more
people living in this area 100 years ago. Continue from here on a
lesser road to the “tree-way” intersection at 39° 57.535', -79°
32.735'. Take the middle fork (ATV trail) to get to the cache. Have
Fun!
Note: It may be possible to drive the road from the
parking area to Elk Rock in any vehicle with sufficient ground
clearance to get across the creek since the locals are pretty good
about breaking open the gate and ripping down the “No Motorized
Vehicles” signs. Be advised, however, that this is quite obviously
illegal and you are on your own if you get caught.
Note: This cache is located on Pennsylvania State
Gamelands. During the peak deer season (November 15 - December 15,
except Sundays), you must "wear a minimum of 250 square
inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head,
chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same
colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a
360° arc".
Note: This is a good place for Cache-In, Trash-Out! This
area can be cleaned up if just a few geocachers will bring out some
trash with them.
Note: I had to resort to a somewhat unconventional hiding
technique due to this cache being stolen. Do not expect to find
this one in a typical hiding place!
