Geocache Description:

Cache is an ammo container with a camouflage paint job & loaded with goodies. It is hidden within 175’ of the Bearfort Fire Tower within the Pequannock River watershed area off Clinton Road.

Reference NY/NJ Trail Conference map 21 for more information. There are several approaches to this location on marked trails. I recommend parking at parking area #2 (N 41°05.186’, W074° 26.640’) and getting Sierra Bravo 01 and Needful Things before proceeding on the yellow blazed trail (or the red/white blazed trail), to the fire tower. I think this approach will be about a 2.25 mile hike along the ridge with no stream crossings. When I placed the cache, I parked at parking area #4 (N 41° 06.242’, W074° 25.033’) off Clinton Rd. and followed the white blaze/teal diamond trail to the yellow trail. The GPS’r indicated .9 miles from the parking area to the cache, but the actual hike from this approach was about 1.75 miles with 2 stream crossings. The area is posted with “Permit required” signs. I have had a permit for the last three years and have never encountered a ranger, but I know they patrol the area. Go here for info on obtaining a permit. The cache is hidden in the standard Skully & Mulder et al. fashion and contains the following items: 2 railroad spikes, sleeve of golf balls (feel free to take entire sleeve), tape measure, hammer, locks, nut cracker, deck of cards, & tape measure key chain. One final note – PLEASE re-hide the cache so it is completely concealed – there seems to be a lot of activity in the area and I am hopeful that this cache won’t be plundered. Enjoy the hunt & please feel free to e-mail me with suggestions or comments. As a bonus, there are two benchmarks within .03 miles of the cache. You can click on the Nearby Benchmarks link from the cache page to see which ones they are. For those that are new to benchmark hunting, check out the benchmark link from the Geocaching Main Page.
