30/12/03 Addendum

Within The City of Edinburgh Councils website there is now a section entitled Heritage Trees of Edinburgh.

52 trees in the City have been identified as being notable and exceptional – this may be due to great age, size or historical and cultural significance. 16 trees are highlighted on the website, one of which is The Colinton Yew.

The tree is within the grounds of the manse but can be seen from the churchyard. As noted in the cache, R L Stevenson spent much of his childhood here and is known to have played in the spreading branches of the old yew tree and he specifically refers to it in some of his verse. The remains of a swing on which he used to play is still evident on one of the limbs. The trunk measures approx 1160mm in diameter and the tree is thought to be 300 to 400 years old. It has been identified as one of Scotland’s top 100 Heritage Trees.

When replacing the box can you please ensure the top of the cache is protected from the downward gaze of passers-by.

The undernoted websites will give you more information on the area……
